68 Hemi Dart Recreation Owner: Jamie Hogg www.hoggwildracing.com The year was 1968. Chrysler decided to build a car which would dominate Super Stock drag racing. With the help of Hurst, the Hemi Dart and Hemi Barracuda were born. These are the badest factory drag cars ever produced in Detroit and sold to the public…. well sort of. Since only approximately 80 Hemi Darts were ever produced, Chrysler hand selected successful drag racers to be eligible to purchase these cars. They were hand built by Hurst with one thing in mind. Go straight fast! and they did. By merely bolting on a set of slicks, 10 second passes could be expected straight out of the box. These were not street cars by any means. With Plexiglas windows, no window regulators, no back seat, fiberglass front end, mirrors deleted, heater deleted, radio deleted, insulation deleted, roughly cut out rear fenders for tire clearance, open headers, light weight van bucket seats on custom brackets (non adjustable) and of course the infamous race Hemi wedged between the fender wells, they were all about function. In fact there was a decal in the glove box stating that this car was not intended for street use and there is no warranty!
This car was built as a street legal recreation of the Hurst Hemi Dart. It started as a rust free southern California 6cyl car. When we got the car, the Hemi and 727 had already been installed, but the car was otherwise still original. It was still in the original white paint with the original bench seat! Imagine driving a manual valve body 727 with a column shifter!?! Well, we completed the restoration and the car was sold on eBay in December 2006.
